The Tale of Two Salesman

This week I wanted to talk about opportunity costs.

Here’s something that Ed Mylett said recently….“Your life will be made up of the thoughts you are most familiar with.”

In other words, the thoughts you think over and over and over again. The more you think about something, the more it comes true.

If it doesn’t come true, you will look for evidence that it’s true.

That’s called confirmation bias. Here’s the definition….

Confirmation bias is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms or supports one’s prior beliefs or values.

Our fitness clients might have confirmation bias in their weight loss journey.

  • I gained a pound, I told you my metabolism is broken!
  • I don’t like eggs, I guess I’m destined to be overweight.
  • My body doesn’t sweat, I guess it doesn’t burn fat.

We know that none of those statements are true. But if someone thinks about them over and over and over they will accept them as truth. In fact, they will confidently say them to other people as if they are factually true.

This type of false information and false beliefs is what plagues the fitness industry and creates myths that holds people back from achieving their results.

So, now I ask you….are you aware of the limiting beliefs holding you back?

It’s much easier to spot limiting beliefs in others. It’s hard to be self-aware enough to know your own. That’s why it’s so valuable to have outside eyes, mentors and people who can objectively look in and say “you keep saying that but that’s not true. In fact, here’s proof of why it’s not true.”

Team, I’ve spent thousands of dollars on self development to have my limiting beliefs stretched and broken. We must constantly be on the lookout for limiting beliefs in others and in ourselves. They are the #1 thing that holds us back from going further in life. I bet I have some right now and I don’t know about it.

That’s why I need to find them quickly because they act like an emergency brake on a Lamborghini. You can push the pedal to the metal but it won’t reach the speed it’s designed to hit until someone lifts the brake.

I will wrap up with a story on limiting beliefs….

A shoe company was looking to expand their sales into new markets. They flew two salesmen to a remote island in South America. They divide the salesman into two sides of the island so they can divide and conquer.

The first salesmen arrived and saw that no one was wearing shoes. He got frustrated and called the Company. He said “send me a return ticket, no one here is wearing shoes.”

The second salesman arrived at the same island and saw that no one was wearing shoes. He said “I found the best market ever!! No one here wears shoes. Send me all the stock we have. We are going to sell out!!”

What’s the main difference? The way they think.

One person sees problems. The other person sees solutions.
