Keep Your Standards High and Squats Low

Today, I wanted to talk about Standards.
Standards are NOT static. Standards are a moving target. They change over time and evolve because a Company is an evolving thing.
I think back to the first gym I owned (before multi-locations) and a Coach walked in asking for ajob. I wasn’t looking for one but he seemed like a good guy and I knew it would free me up to do more sales so I said yes. No interview. No calling references. The Standard was a one-step process 8 years ago. Walk in and ask.
Today, it’s an 8-step process before a Coach joins the team. The Standard has changed.
Our Standards are the bare minimum effort that we will tolerate. They are the requirements we want from ourselves and our team and we will not settle for less.
As time goes on, “the bar” of our standards should be rising up. We should be expecting more from ourselves, our clients, our team and everyone around us.
Your standards are either growing or dying…there’s no maintenance in life.

  • Our muscles grow or atrophy.
  • The EFT goes up or down.
  • Our clients lose weight or gain weight.
  • We can learn more or get complacent.
  • The communication gets stronger or weaker.

It’s an ebb and flow but your Standards are a line in the sand. They are the point where you WILL NOT allow things ebb or flow past that point. It’s when you finally get uncomfortable enough to speak up and take action.
And you should have your own personal standards too. These are the rules you put in place for your own life. Think about it….there’s certain things you will tolerate and certain things you will not.

And you should have your own personal standards too. These are the rules you put in place for your own life. Think about it….there’s certain things you will tolerate and certain things you will not.Recently, I heard a phrase that I loved…

“What you tolerate, you might as well celebrate.”

That’s powerful right? Think about what you tolerate in your life.
THOSE ARE YOUR STANDARDS!
How do you allow people to treat you?
What is the bare minimum you allow in your life?
Where do you find yourself pushing people to improve?
What triggers you and what doesn’t bother you? (Strong indicator of Standards) If you haven’t set Standards in your personal and professional life, make that a priority. It gets most powerful when you speak out loud to others and live it. Here’s some Standards I live by…

  • I never go more than 48 hours without a workout
  • I workout on holidays so I can enjoy the holiday food
  • I can’t watch more than 2 hours of TV in a row without movement
  • I must read or listen to at least one book per month
  • I must sell one thing per day
  • I must make at least one person smile per day
  • I must find a way to help another person everyday

These are some of my Standards and you should have your own.We have Company Standards too that protect our culture, client experience and team performance. You must hold the line on your Standards every single second of every single day.And it all starts with you. Keep your Standards HIGH and your Squats LOW.
