Don’t Bait and Switch Your Team Members

Have you hired someone but ended up asking them to take on some tasks outside their job description? I certainly have done it.

  • Maybe it was a Coach that you asked to phone sales….
  • Maybe it was an Admin that you asked to cover some sessions…
  • Maybe it was a team member that has never led a team being asked to be the Manager….

You’ve probably heard of the bait-and-switch offers that tricked people into coming into your gym with one thing only to be sold something else.

Well, that’s how I view those situations I listed above.

If you hire a Coach and then ask them to do phone sales, you kinda did a bait-and-switch job offer. They didn’t apply to your job posting to sell. They applied to COACH.

I’ve made this mistake thinking that someone is good in one area and assuming they would be good in another. But most of the time it didn’t work out. You must spend time with this person and really help them to develop that skill set…it probably won’t come pre-installed in them.

I see this when I talk to Gym Owners about Gym Reinforcements. They feel good that someone is “sitting in the seat” of lead follow up. But when I dig in a little more, I find out they aren’t performing at a high level. That’s because that’s not their strength suit.

Many times they don’t want to say “no” to you because you are the Owner. They want to help you out. But once someone gets put in a seat that isn’t right for them, you’ve put them in an awkward position. Usually one of three scenarios plays out….

  • They have to build up the courage to tell you they made a mistake.
  • You get resentful they aren’t doing a good job and look to hire someone else.
  • You accept the lackluster performance and consider it “good enough for now”.

The simple answer is to go back to the beginning and be extremely aware of who you hire for each function of your business. Admins rarely make good Coaches. Managers rarely make good Admins. You have to put a specialist in each place of your business to really assemble the best team possible.
